Sunscreen, Vitamin D & Pregnancy: What Every Mama-to-Be Should Know

As the sunny days arrive, many pregnant women start wondering about sunscreen and how to safely enjoy time outdoors during pregnancy. While sunscreen is an important part of protecting your skin, there are a few things worth keeping in mind as a mama-to-be.

Sunscreen and Vitamin D During Pregnancy

Sunscreen works by blocking or reflecting the sun’s rays — the same rays your body uses to produce vitamin D.

Vitamin D is especially important during pregnancy because it supports:

  • your baby’s bone and teeth development,

  • your immune system,

  • healthy muscle function,

  • energy levels,

  • and overall maternal wellbeing.

Low vitamin D levels during pregnancy have also been linked to increased fatigue and a higher risk of certain pregnancy complications.

Although sunlight is the main source of vitamin D , you need to be extra careful with sun exposure during pregnancy. Even a bit of sun rays could result in increased pregnancy pigmentation. Hence, avoiding the sun is super important, almost as important as supplementing vit D.

Since avoiding the sun is very important for pregnant women, many healthcare providers recommend continuing vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy, even in spring and summer months. Always follow the advice of your doctor or midwife regarding the correct dosage for you.

Choosing Safer Sunscreens During Pregnancy

Some chemical sunscreens contain UV-filter ingredients such as Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, Homosalate, Octocrylene, and Avobenzone. These ingredients have raised some health and environmental concerns, although the evidence and risk levels vary depending on the ingredient, the dose, and how the product is used.

While research is still ongoing, many pregnant women prefer to be more cautious and choose mineral sunscreens instead.

Mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide sit on top of the skin rather than being absorbed as easily, making them a popular option during pregnancy and for sensitive skin.

Covering Up Is Often the Best Protection

Whenever possible, protecting yourself naturally from strong sun exposure is ideal:

  • wear lightweight long sleeves,

  • use wide-brimmed hats,

  • stay in the shade,

  • and avoid the strongest midday sun.

These methods provide excellent protection without relying entirely on sunscreen.

That said, it’s important to be clear: using sunscreen is far safer than going without UV protection. Protecting your skin from excessive UV exposure helps reduce the risk of:

  • skin cancer,

  • melasma and pregnancy pigmentation,

  • premature ageing,

  • sun damage,

  • and melanoma.

Pregnancy is a beautiful time to slow down, care for your body, and make thoughtful choices for both yourself and your growing baby.

A balanced approach — sensible sun exposure, vitamin D support, shade, and carefully chosen sunscreen — can help you enjoy the warmer months safely and confidently.
