Pregnancy Sleep Tips for Travelling:

How to Sleep Better During Pregnancy While Away From Home

Some pregnant women may be planning a little getaway before baby arrives, a "baby moon" as some may call it.

While travelling during pregnancy and a change of scenery can be wonderfully refreshing, sleeping in a new environment can sometimes feel more difficult than expected — especially when pregnancy sleep challenges are already affecting your rest.

Many pregnant women experience disrupted sleep, pregnancy insomnia, or difficulty getting comfortable at night, particularly during the second and third trimester.

Research shows that between 45–94% of pregnant women experience poor sleep quality, insomnia, or fragmented sleep in the course of their pregnancy.

Being away from home can add another layer of challenge, so here are a few simple pregnancy sleep tips to help you sleep better during pregnancy while travelling.

1. Maintain Regularity for Better Sleep During Pregnancy

One of the most effective healthy sleep habits during pregnancy is keeping a regular sleep schedule. Going to bed at around the same time each night helps regulate your body clock and improve sleep quality.

Even while travelling, try to return to your Airbnb or hotel around the time you would normally begin winding down at home. Maintaining a consistent pregnancy sleep routine can help support deeper, more restorative sleep.

2. Stick to Your Evening Routine

Pregnancy can already make sleep more fragmented, so familiar bedtime habits become even more important. Whether it’s a warm shower, prenatal stretching, herbal tea, reading, meditation, or calming music, following your normal evening routine helps signal to your body that it’s time to rest.

Simple routines can be powerful sleep support during pregnancy and may help reduce pregnancy insomnia while away from home.

3. Prioritise Darkness and Comfort

Creating the right sleep environment is essential for better sleep during pregnancy. Many accommodations don’t have proper blackout curtains, but darkness plays an important role in melatonin production and sleep quality.

If possible, request blackout curtains or bring a sleep mask. Turning off small lights and covering windows with blankets or sheets can also help reduce early morning light and nighttime light pollution.

Comfort also matters when sleeping while pregnant. Bringing your favourite pillow, pregnancy pillow, or comfortable sleepwear can make a big difference and help your body relax more easily in an unfamiliar environment.

Whether you are in your first trimester or navigating third trimester sleep difficulties, prioritising rest while travelling can help support both your wellbeing and your baby’s development.

Wishing you restful trips, safe travels, and plenty of good sleep during pregnancy.
